The name ‘love handles’ sounds cute and cuddly, but we all know what it really means. Love handles are just deposits of excess fat around your abdominal area and excessive fat can damage your overall health and increase your risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. To rid yourself of love handles, or belly fat, you need to decrease your calories, increase your exercise and strengthen the muscles in the area. Here are ten tips on how you can lose your love handles – a mixture of exercises and sensible steps that you can take:
1. Eat more raw fruit and veg, preferably organic
You knew this would be top of the list, didn’t you? The single most important thing you can do to lose fat is to eat healthily. Add more fruit and vegetables to your diet because they include plenty of fibre, vitamins and minerals but are low in calories. When buying fruits and vegetables, try to go for organic versions as much as you can, as these are best for your health and wellbeing.
2. Cut down on alcohol
Drinking alcohol makes your blood sugar levels fluctuate and will lead to the storage of more fat. So, another tip on how to get rid of belly fat and love handles is to keep your alcohol intakes to around two drinks, twice a week and avoid sweet sugary alcoholic drinks altogether.
3. Stay off processed foods and your love handles will decrease in size
Factory made food and fast food are laden with extra sugar and fat that will cause further fat to be deposited around your waist. Eat fresh and eat healthy, and you will see those love handles decrease in size.
4. Eat regular meals
Weight gain around the middle can also be caused by not eating regularly. Eat small meals, more often and it won’t cause the spikes in blood sugar levels that cause extra fat to be stored.

Don’t overlook the importance of a good night’s sleep, especially when you are trying to lose weight. Another focussed exercise is to preform deadlifts. Stand with your legs about shoulder width apart and your knees slightly bent, so you are in a squatting position. Then, using some weights or a kettle-ball, bring the weights up in front of you, with your arms outstretched. It’s hard work, but it works!
