Are starches fattening?

Foods that are high in starch act as a vital source of energy for the human body.

These foods include bread, rice, pasta, cereals, beans, some fruits and some vegetables such as potatoes and yams. These foods are low in fat and calories.

So does this mean you can eat as much as you like of them, without gaining weight? No! These foods become high in fat and calories when either eaten in large portions or when they are smothered with high-fat toppings such as butter or mayonnaise.

Remember that a healthy diet should include fruits, vegetables, dairy products, protein and healthy fats and carbohydrates. Try purchasing wholegrain cereals instead of refined ones, and fat-free or low-fat milk instead of full cream. Go for lean cuts of meat, and avoid foods with high sodium, cholesterol and preservatives.

A balanced diet is essential for a healthy body and a good foundation for weight loss.
