The mere idea of ingesting insects, larvae or caterpillars, whether just to win a dare, or for any other reason, is a definite no-no for most people!
But now, new research by the UN food and agriculture organization is revealing that the ‘health benefits of consuming nutritious insects could help fight obesity’.
Protein and minerals
It is believed that there are a considerable number of insects that contain the same amount of minerals and protein, as that contained in meat. In addition, insects contain more healthy fats, that doctors recommend for a balanced diet.
Insects eaten in some countries
People, mainly from Africa and Asia, have been consuming various types of insects, larvae and caterpillar for centuries, whereas this hasn’t been common practice in western countries. For example, Mopani worms are quite popular in South Africa, whereas eating a worm in western countries may be regarded as unthinkable!
Restaurants in Europe are now beginning to include insects in some of their recipes, which are regarded as ‘exotic delicacies’.
The World Health Organisation estimates that obesity affects approximately 500 million people. Would you consider consuming dishes comprised of insects?
