There are plenty of safe ways to lose weight that include healthy lifestyle choices, but there are also many dangerous diet methods on the rise today.

Not all diets are considered safe, and unfortunately there are cases where people look for extreme measures in order to lose a large amount of weight in the shortest period of time.

Three of these dangerous weight loss diets, include:

1. The grapefruit diet

Grapefruit needs to be eaten at every meal with this diet, and the reason why it falls under the dangerous diet category, is due to evidence which suggests the interference grapefruit has with medication.

According to Dr. Elisabeth Weichselbarum of the British Nutrition Foundation in an interview with the UK Daily Mail, grapefruit accelerated the formation of an almost fatal blood clot in one woman as it interfered with her medication.

2. The master cleanse diet

This diet is also known as the lemon cleanse or maple syrup diet, and has been around since the 1940s. This 10-day programme follows a strict diet of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne peppers.

Major side effects of this starvation diet include diarrhoea or constipation, and extreme headaches. It can also lead to the breakdown of muscles, a weakened immune system, and blood sugar problems.

3. The laxative diet

Laxatives are used to flush out additional food and water at a quicker pace in order to lose weight. Bacteria which is crucial to absorbing nutrients is eliminated at the same time.

Common side effects include: dehydration, constipation, bloating, permanent damage to bowels, bloody diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and electrolyte imbalance. In some cases the effects can be fatal.

If you are looking for a safe weight loss diet, it is highly recommended that you speak to your doctor first.

Find a healthy eating plan that you can incorporate safely into your daily lifestyle without having to worry about any dangerous side effects.
