Do you sometimes get a sudden urge to eat naughty snacks – even when you're not hungry? You know... the salty, greasy, or sugary kinds?

If you do – don't worry, it happens to most people. All it takes is for you to catch a whiff of someone's packet of salt and vinegar chips, chocolate cupcake or samoosa and the snack craving hits!

The trick is to learn how to control these urges. Here are five tips that will help:

Eat every three to four hours

When you stick to an eating schedule that includes main meals and healthy snacks, you're less likely to indulge in junk food.

Think about it for a second...

Before you give in to those naughty snack temptations, take a minute to ask yourself why you're experiencing the craving. It could be anything from smelling fried food or seeing an advert on TV for the latest chocolate snack sensation, to feeling excited of anxious about something.

Channel your emotions away from food

Feelings of depression, boredom and anxiety usually cause people to want to snack on things that are comforting. Instead of giving in to these temporary temptations because you're not feeling so good, do something productive, such as calling a friend or going for a walk.

Give in to temptation

That's right... if you have a craving for a chocolate chip cookie mid morning, have one. But only one. Savour the taste and the experience. If you cut out all snack temptations, your cravings will become overpowering and that's when over-indulging happens.

Keep hydrated

It's easy to confuse hunger and thirst sometimes. If you're feeling peckish, have a few sips of water and then wait a few minutes to see if you're still craving a snack. A good idea is to keep a bottle of water with you and drink a little every hour.
