Save time and eat right

It might seem like the concept of healthy cooking is only aimed at people who have ample time or unlimited resources.

Well, this couldn't be further from the truth. Healthy cooking is for everyone. Even if you're pressed for time or have a very busy and active family.

Just take a look at these five simple healthy cooking tips...

  1. Look for versatile recipes. Cooking becomes boring and “chore-like” when the same recipes are made time and again. Choose recipes that can be easily adapted to what you feel like eating or what's available in your kitchen.

  2. Use your freezer. Cook batches of rice, pasta, mince, etc., that you can separate into freezer containers. This makes for quick and easy meal preparation on those mad or rushed days.

  3. Make a smoothie. These are tasty, quick and healthy meals that can be whipped up in no time and enjoyed on the go. Plus, they're the perfect cool down for hot summer days, and kids love them. Simply throw in a banana, whatever fruit you have available, some honey, low-fat yoghurt, and skim milk for a delicious smoothie!

  4. Bake healthy muffins. Bake a batch or two of your favourite healthy muffins, such as bran or blueberry and freeze them. Then, when you need them, simple defrost a few and enjoy! These are great for breakfasts, mid-morning snacks or school lunches.

  5. Cut out the cans. Instead of buying canned vegetables – which are extremely high in sodium – replace them with frozen veggies instead. These are packed full of good nutrients.
