Check with your doctor

If you find that you're suddenly gaining weight after taking a new medication, it's a good idea to check with your doctor, especially if your diet or exercise habits haven't changed.

There are, however, a few common types of medications that are known to make people more susceptible to weight gain. This doesn't mean that anyone who takes them will gain extra weight.

Common medications that could cause weight gain

• Antidepressants

• Diabetes medications

• Hormones

• Antihistamines

• Cancer-fighting agents

• Cholesterol/lipid-lowering drugs

• Antipsychotics

• Anticonvulsants/mood stabilisers

• Migraine medications

• Beta blockers

• Calcium channel blockers

• Alpha agonist anti-hypertensive

• Antiretrovirals

Important

This doesn't mean that any of these medications will most certainly cause weight gain, it simply means that it could. If you're taking any of these medications and feel that it could be causing you to gain additional weight, make an appointment and check with your doctor.
