Weight loss in the 21st century

Almost every person, company or institution is using social media to connect and share information across the web.

When it comes to social media and technology today, the web really is your oyster. Especially if you're trying to lose weight and need a support group.

Support through social media

“Connecting with people who share the same goals is like having your very own cheering section,” says Rachel Meltzer Warren, RD, a New York-based nutritionist. “There's always someone there to celebrate when you drop those first 10 pounds or help you get back on track if you re-gain three.”

What's your social media preference?

Whether it's Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram, there are loads of platforms fom which to choose.

Pin away!

Nutritionist Mitzi Dulan, recommends creating five boards on Pinterest to keep you motivated and share your weight loss goals. These can include:

  • Foods high in fibre, protein and healthy fat

  • Workout plans

  • Inspirational quotes

  • Health articles

  • Favourite products

Blog about it

Creating a blog and blogging about your weight loss breakthroughs, struggles, frustrations and successes – while knowing that people are following your story – provides accountability.

Not only that, but it's a fun way to snap and showcase what healthy meals you've made, meet other like-minded people, and get creative!

Blogger and WordPress are two free, fantastic blogging platforms and a great place to start if you're new to the world of blogging.

Use Weight Loss Buddy

Weight Loss Buddy is a super free, interactive social media platform that allows you to be surrounded by a network of support for dieting and exercise.

Here you can find a weight loss buddy, share photos, track your diet and exercises, plan your meals, and blog about your weight loss journey!

Post or tweet it

Tweeting about your weight loss goals on Twitter or posting about it on Facebook is a great idea. It's a good way to be accountable and to connect with other like-minded people.

Be careful not to bombard those time lines with posts that are only about your weight loss journey, as this could cause a few friends or followers to get rather irritated and stop following or “unfriend” you.

It might be a better idea to stick to a few tweets a day, or join some Facebook weight loss support groups.
