Why South African women struggle to slim down

Kim Hofmann, Adventure Boot Camp’s resident dietitian and Western Province chairperson of the Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA), says South Africa’s obesity statistics continue to skyrocket, especially amongst women and preschool children.

Just in the last 10 years, the figures have increased from 27,5 to 40 percent for women and from 10,6 to 18,2 percent for girls and boys aged two to five years old! These are very scary statistics considering that diseases like diabetes, heart disease, strokes and some cancers are all linked to obesity.

According to Hofmann’s studies, two thirds of the most popular family recipes, such as macaroni cheese followed by brownies for dessert, have more calories because they include more high-fat ingredients and fewer low calorie ingredients, like vegetables. One-third of them had more calories because of larger suggested serving sizes.

Why are our eating habits so bad?

The demanding roles of mother, career woman and wife leave many women with little free time. Many women stop exercising, opt for easy take-away meals and end up experiencing burnout and even depression. This is when over-eating occurs, the weight piles on and the cycle begins. The kids suffer along with the parents, as they lose out on learning how and why they should eat nutritious, well-balanced meals.

So what is the secret of slim women?

Portion control is one of the secrets of slim women. In fact, Hofmann says that a recent study found that those who practiced portion control lost 5 percent or more of body weight compared to those who did not.
