How to choose a healthy breakfast cereal

Sneaky cereal calories

If you start the day with a delicious bowl of your favourite cereal, you may think that you're on the right track to healthy eating.

After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, isn't it?

That's true, but not all cereals are good for you. In fact, a lot of them contain a ton of added sugar (even some of the healthier-looking ones).

Choosing a healthy cereal

The first thing you should always do is check the nutrition lable on the box. Then, bear these following tips in mind:

  • Look for “100% whole” wheat, oats, or other grains. If the box says, “whole grain”, you'll know that at least half the grain ingredients are whole
  • Pick a cereal that doesn't have more than 220mg of sodium a serving
  • Look for cereals that have 10 grams of sugar – or less – per serving
  • Power up your cereal with protein by adding a small serving of non-fat Greek yoghurt
