Cut out extra sugar

Just because you're trying to cut down on sugar doesn't mean that you should forgo baking altogether when you're dieting.

You can still whip up some of your favourite family treats by simply substituting the sugar you'd normally use with some fruit instead.

Add fruit to your baking

Here are a few delicious fruit ideas you could try using instead of sugar the next time you feel like baking:

  • Raisins. Blend a cup of raisins in a food processor and add to dry ingredients.
  • Cranberries. Add a cup of cranberries to your next batch of scones or muffins.
  • Processed dates. Substitute two-thirds of a cup of dates for one cup of sugar.
  • Pureed banana. Eliminate the sugar completely when baking banana bread or muffins and use extra-rip bananas instead.
  • Orange juice. The next time you make homemade bread, swap the sugar for freshly-squeezed orange juice.
