There is an annual cycle in dieting that we are all aware of. We work hard through summer so we can go to the beach without feeling embarrassed, and then as soon as it begins to get cold we seemingly magically begin to gain weight.

While there is an evolutionary explanation for part of this phenomenon - our brain wants to protect us from freezing, and fat helps keep us warm - much of the added weight has to do with subtle changes in our eating habits when winter sets in.

Here are 5 tips to help you continue your summer weight loss in the cold months.

1. Keep your morning routine the same

Try to wake up at the same time as you did in summer, and eat and drink the same things. If you were in the habit of drinking a tall glass of water when you get out of bed, keep doing that.

If you absolutely can't stomach whatever breakfast you were eating, make sure you replace it with something similar in terms of caloric load and macronutrient content. Don't swap a fruit and protein smoothie for flapjacks and syrup.
