Calculating calories accurately for weight loss

If for some reason you are unable to walk or run outdoors, a treadmill can be very useful in helping you to get in your 30 minutes of physical activity daily.

If you are trying to lose weight however, and are monitoring the number of calories you are burning, a treadmill may help you to estimate the total number of calories that you are using up (depending on the time that you are running on the equipment). This could be compared to the net number of calories, that is kilojoules burned solely through exercise, above and beyond what we would have used anyway. Remember that we all burn a certain amount of calories when in a state of rest.

Runner’s World provides the following example,

If you run at a minimum of eight km/h,

Total kJ(kilojoules) burned/ km = 4,13 x body weight (kg) whilst,

Net kJ burned/ km = 3,47 x weight (kg)

This may be useful in helping you to make an accurate calculation of exactly how many calories you may have burned through exercising on a treadmill.

Consult your doctor

Always remember to consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise program or making intense changes to your current one – especially if you suffer from any medical conditions and for some reason are required not to place your body or yourself under any form of stress or strain.
