Weight bearing exercises are great for weight loss, since, apart from burning calories along the way, they also help you to build muscle tissue.

If you have not done any weight bearing exercises previously, then start small – do not attempt to carry extremely heavy weights or heavy objects as you could hurt yourself immensely. Chat to a physical trainer as to what size weights you should start with and when to make incremental changes.

At the gym, get guidance on the proper way to handle weights and ask as many questions as you need to. Remember that, whilst exercise may challenge you, it is not meant to leave you in any state of discomfort or injury.

At home, you can start by using canned foods as weights, before moving to heavier objects. Weight-bearing exercises can be done during a scheduled time or even whilst watching your favourite television series, just be sure to include some in your exercise routine.
