The answer to this scenario is a complicated one, but one of the possible reasons is that you are actually eating a lot of 'hidden' calories every day in foods or ingredients you didn't expect.

Remember, the basic rule of weight loss is that if you eat TOO MANY CALORIES you will get fatter. It doesn't matter whether the 'too many calories' comes from apples or chocolates - if it's too much, it's too much.

There are many foods in the grocery cupboards of even healthy-eaters that sneakily add calories to your meals without you really thinking about it.

Here are a few to be wary of:

1. Sweet Chilli Sauce

Sweet Chilli Sauce contains more sugar than ANY other sauce out there.

It makes sense too... Take chilli sauce - hot, spicy - and try to make it palatable to the public. What's the trick? Add sugar. How much sugar do you need to make chilli into a sweet? A LOT!

If you're adding sweet chilli sauce to your meals because 'chilli speeds up your metabolism' I've got some bad news for you... No increase in metabolism can make up for the amount of extra sugar you're pumping into your meal.

Alternative: Use dry chilli flakes or fresh red or green chilli - just use less so it's not too hot, If you need a sauce, pop some fresh chilli into some olive oil and vinegar.
