The perfect weight-loss pantry: So, what about sugar?

Sugar - yes, you should keep some

Sugar is EVIL! That's the message you're getting pretty consistently in the nutrition world. I agree that it's pretty bad for you to eat sugar-laden foods all the time (this is obvious), but I think that statements like 'sugar is more addictive than cocaine' are slightly overblown.

So, I'm here to tell you that I think you should keep some sugar in your pantry.

Why? Well, REAL LIFE dictates that every now and then you are going to need to bake something for a birthday or some other special occasion and will need sugar to make the recipe work. And while there are all sorts of fashionable sugar-replacements like xylitol and stevia there are no long-term studies yet to show that these are not harmful in some way.

A little sugar now and then won't kill you. [Tweet this]If it's a tiny little part of an otherwise healthy diet it's really not a big deal. The problem with sugar right now is that most people eat a diet in which sugar is one of the main food groups - that's a VERY different kettle of fish.

So yes, you should keep sugar in your pantry. But you should use it seldom enough that you have to scratch around in the back of the cupboard - way behind the dried peaches, sunflower seeds, dried lentils and brown rice - to find it.
