A healthy festive season is possible!

With more social events taking place during the holidays, diets often go out the window and exercise routines are lost.

Fortunately, there are ways to strike a healthy balance.

The healthy balance backpack

Dr Robert Delgado, registered chiropractor and certified wellness practitioner, uses the analogy of a backpack to describe how people can try and find a balance between being healthy and unhealthy this festive season.

If you know you are going to eat a seven-course meal tonight, have a really healthy and light breakfast and lunch.

“Imagine you are permanently carrying a backpack designed to last 100 years. For every stressful lifestyle choice, you put a rock in the backpack and for every positive choice, you take one out. If the backpack gets too full, it is more likely to break and suffer from wear and tear and not perform as well for the amount of time it is needed. In addition, the heavier the backpack gets, the harder it is to do everyday activities. So, the goal is to minimise the number of rocks that go in, while at same time consciously asking yourself, ‘How can I take rocks out?’ to maintain a balance and ensure the backpack lasts as long as you need it.”

During the festive season, you are obviously going to put rocks into your backpack, as you end up drinking and eating more, says Dr Delgado. “As a result, you have to try think of healthy ways to remove rocks from the backpack, such as eating a salad, going for a brisk walk when you wake up, or sitting for five minutes meditating.”

So, if you know you are going to eat a seven-course meal tonight, have a really healthy and light breakfast and lunch, he says. “Or if you are about to eat a bucket of KFC, eat a big salad beforehand – by eating something fresh and healthy first, you are less likely to eat more of the unhealthy foods, as you fill up on the nutritious food.”
