If you always have a sauce with your meals, and find that you are piling on the calories, then maybe it’s time for a little change.

White sauces are usually very high in calories depending on what ingredients are added to it during the preparation process. The main culprits of calories in white sauces are the butter and cheese. Together with refined flour and milk, it can be relatively easy to pile on the weight if you are regularly consuming white sauces with your meals.

Try having a marinara sauce instead as it offers more nutritional benefits than white sauces and it is lower in calories too. Tomatoes are the base of a marinara sauce. Your sauce will therefore be packed with lycopene, a substance found in tomatoes which helps to reduce free radicals in our body. In addition, it contains vitamin C which is fabulous at protecting against illnesses.

As a comparison, it is worthy to note that half a cup of marinara sauce is estimated to hold 250 kilojoules whilst the same portion of white sauce carries with it approximately 1 040 kilojoules. You make the choice!
