Clean eating

“You’ve heard the saying ‘six packs are made in the kitchen,’ while this is most certainly true, a healthy eating plan is the first step to getting the body that you want, you also need to ensure that this is balanced with enough exercise to truly get the results you are looking for,” says Kim Hofmann, the resident nutritionist at Adventure Boot Camp.

A healthy eating plan is not ‘one-size-fits-all’

“To be sustainable, an eating plan needs to incorporate a variety of foods, which will give you the nourishment and sustenance that you need to go about your day – ensuring that you don’t feel deprived. One way to achieve your weight-loss goals is to approach meals as a lifestyle and to 'eat cleanly' as much as possible,” says Hofmann.

Eating cleanly encourages you to choose the healthiest option in each food group and to eat foods in their most natural form. By changing the way you look at food and by incorporating fresh, whole plant foods into your diet, you will soon reap the rewards.

It’s all about balance

“Eating cleanly is not about perfection. Be flexible and accept that it is not always possible to eat cleanly at every meal. Adventure Boot Camp’s approach is about raising your awareness of the foods that you eat and trying to eliminate processed foods ... Be gentle with yourself - every day and every meal is a new opportunity for your health, it’s all about finding the right balance,” adds Kim.

Clean eating tips

  1. Eat foods in their most natural form, unprocessed and unrefined. Buy recognisable ingredients and prepare food at home to avoid the unhealthy additives that are often found in processed and packaged foods.
  2. Eat mostly fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat all the colours of the rainbow and incorporate lots of leafy, green veggies into your meals.
  3. Always read the food labels. When it comes to the ingredients listed on food labels, less is definitely more. Avoid packaged foods containing chemicals, saturated and trans fats, syrup/sugar, sweeteners, preservatives, flavourings and colourants.
  4. Stock up on healthy fats like nuts, seeds and avocados, and fatty fish (e.g. salmon, trout, pilchards, herring) if you eat animals – but remember, all in moderation.
  5. Drink lots of water or unsweetened herbal teas to flush out your system.
  6. Ensure that you balance your caloric intake with exercise. A 60-minute Adventure Boot Camp session in the morning or evening will help kick-start your metabolism.
