Exercise tips for weight loss: Dont overdo it!

(Fotalia)

Tip: Don't overdo it!

It's really easy to get excited about exercising because you're going to lose weight, get toned and look amazing!

What often happens is that inexperienced, unfit people get revved up and hit the gym TOO hard and get injured (or so sore they never want to go back) within the first few workouts.

What you have to remember is that what you should be aiming for is to maintain a long-term training programme. This means that getting injured in week one is VERY counterproductive.

So how do you do this? Here are a few tips:

  • For the first few weeks, spend time learning the correct technique for every exercise you will be doing on your programme. Bad technique usually equals injury.
  • Don't train every day. You need to rest in order to recover. If you're unfit, train three or four times per week for the first four weeks at least. Then maybe scale it up to five times.
  • Don't lift weights that are too heavy. The other people in the gym are not your concern. Go lighter than you want to and build up over time. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to do 10 to 15 reps with the weight if it's the right weight for you.
  • If you feel like you're going to hurt yourself STOP! Don't be a hero.
