The people who tend to struggle the most with diets are those who have a sweet tooth. If you'd rather eat a chocolate bar than a steak, I'm speaking to you - although this lesson really applies to anyone trying to be healthy ...

In order to lose weight successfully and keep it off in the long term you need to identify a few sweet food items that are not too damaging to the rest of your diet. This will allow you to have a treat or two per week without completely ruining all the good work you've done with disciplined eating and exercise.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Sweet fruits - frozen grapes are actually super tasty, fry bananas in coconut oil with a little vanilla powder (from Woolies) sprinkled on top, or spread some sugar-free peanut butter on apple slices
  • Dark (70% or higher) chocolate - preferably good quality. Don’t eat the whole thing at once! Or buy the small slabs if you don’t trust yourself
  • Yogurt and berries

A brief internet search will also offer some great ideas

The important thing is to cut out the 'normal' sweets and substitute something a bit more nutritious in their place. Find your favourite and then just make sure not to overdo your consumption of it.
