Having a pet - a dog, cat or even a horse - has long been known to be good for us in terms of our general levels of happiness and contentment

Coming home to be greeted by an animal who is happy to see you no matter what kind of day you've had sometimes feels like a lifesaver.

But did you know that having a pet can actually help you lose weight and improve your general health?

1. Having an active pet – like a dog - makes you more active

Like humans, animals require exercise in order to function optimally.

The difference is that humans learn to bury their need for exercise (it still comes out, but in more 'sophisticated' ways) where animals just get more and more hyperactive and destructive until they get a decent energy release.

Being a responsible dog owner means exercising your pet EVERY DAY for at least 30 minutes. This SHOULD mean that you do some exercise too, even if it's just a walk.
