Don’t get stuck with winter weight

It’s easy to understand how regular fitness sessions can turn into another early evening on the couch, pizza slice in one hand and the TV remote in the other.

From chips to cookies, it’s also somehow harder to resist unhealthy temptations in winter than it is in summer.

“Physiologically, there is some research to show that falling temperatures ignite a part of the brain to stockpile calories, making us hungrier,” says Johannesburg based registered dietitian Monique Piderit, “The thinking is that the primitive brain is conditioned to look for more food (calories) when temperatures drop to build fat stores that would otherwise have helped keep us warm to survive an icy winter thousands of years ago."

"Psychologically, we look for warm, cosy, comforting foods in winter. Somehow a cold salad just doesn’t quite satisfy in winter.”
