How to burn more fat during exercise

When we exercise, our body’s oxidation of fat and carbohydrates depends on the intensity and duration of the activity.

Researchers analysed the effect of consuming an alkaloid, known as p-synephrine, on burning fat during rest and exercise. Their findings are surprising …

Combining this weight loss supplement with exercise

Because of its chemical similarity to ephedrine (a nervous system stimulant), and the substance’s activation of β3 adrenergic receptors, p-synephrine has become a popular supplement added to weight loss products.

Although at low concentrations, p-synephrine can also be found in citrus fruits such as oranges, mandarins and grapefruit. It is also available in greater concentrations as extract of bitter orange (Citrus aurantium).

Putting p-synephrine to the test

Researchers found that an hour after p-synephrine ingestion, it had no effect on energy expenditure, heart rate or arterial pressure.

“However, the substance produced a notable change in substrate utilisation during exercise: p-synephrine ingestion pre-exercise increased the rate of fat oxidation and reduced carbohydrate oxidation at low and moderate intensity,” explained Juan Del Coso, lead author of the paper form Camilo José Cela University,

The findings suggest that p-synephrine supplements could be useful to increase fat oxidation by seven grams per hour of exercise.

While the authors highlight the need to determine the effects of the long-term use, it shouldn’t hurt to make a citrus fruit, which contains p-synephrine, a pre-workout snack.
