Most people think it's a given that as we get older we also get more and more out-of-shape. That it’s normal to add a couple of extra kilos in all the wrong places every year…

But this CAN'T be healthy right? Surely as we get older we should do everything we can to stay in shape, fit and strong to set ourselves up for vitality into our later years?

Here are some tactics to get this right:

1. Strength first ... don't starve yourself!

When people think about the process of staying in shape as they age, they usually concern themselves with losing weight.

While this may be a good thing in one way - you certainly don't want to be OVERweight - it can also be misleading. You see, as you get older your primary focus should be on retaining strength, and this is a fine balancing act.

Many older people end-up very thin (too thin) and frail.

What you want is to be a healthy weight but not skin-and-bones thin so that you retain as much muscle mass as possible. So don't focus on reducing your weight, focus on maintaining your strength and losing some fat.

Action: Start adding resistance training to your exercise routine, and eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals for healthy bones and muscles. DON’T starve yourself.
