Football Season Weight Gain

Your Super Bowl snacks might make you look a little more like a linebacker: According to a new online Harris Interactive survey, a quarter of football fans admit to packing on pounds during the sport's season. The average gain: 10 big ones.

What's more, the survey, which was sponsored by Nutrisystem and taken by 1,283 football fans, found that 16 percent of respondents gained 20 pounds or more.

While tailgating cookouts and game-watch parties all play their role in football-season weight gain, the championship game also makes a pretty big play for your expanding waistline. According to the USDA, people eat more on Super Bowl Sunday that on any other day of the year (besides Thanksgiving, that is). The Calorie Control Council estimates that the average football fan will put away 1,200 calories and 50 grams of fat from snacks alone. Of course, you don't have to surrender to all of the buffalo wings, nachos, and fried everything that will likely be tempting you this weekend. These sane strategies for healthy eating on Super Bowl Sunday can help you stay on track.
