Weight Loss Tip #105 – Exercise with your dog!

weight loss tip-THS

Here is an effective way to make your daily exercising routine not only stress free but also fun and interactive – involve your family dog! Don’t have a pet? There are many reasons to get a dog during pregnancy and even if you are not pregnant, a dog is not only a great companion and friend but also an awesome exercise buddy.

Exercising with your dog will not only tire out your forever restless furry companion, but you will burn all those calories without even realizing you were putting in all that effort. You can start off by grabbing hold of a rope or an old stuff toy and encourage your dog to grab onto one end while you hold the other. Within no time, your dog will start tugging from his end and both of you can have a tug-of-war. While doing so, consciously push your hips out and bend your knees to avoid any pressure on your joints and pull as hard as you can. Your dog will only tighten his grip on the rope or toy and your arms will get a good workout. Here are others ways to have fun while losing weight.

You can continue doing this for around 10-15 minutes and then take a break.  If you have a bigger dog like a Labrador or German Shepherd, you can go for a second or third round of tug-of-war. If your dog is smaller, like a Pug or Chihuahua, you might want to go easier on him during the tug-of-war. Instead you can lift your dog up with both your hands and then try bending your elbows by lifting him till your face. Repeat this 15 times and then take a break. Try doing more than one set at a time. After your arms get worked out, you can take your dog for a 10-15 minutes long power run followed by a long walk. Another fun form of exercise would be that after you throw the ball, run along with your dog towards it and try your best to outrun him.  Remember to keep talking to your dog and encouraging him to run or exercise with you, so both of you also have a great bonding session! Other than weight loss, your dog can also help to boost your happiness.
