Put the ice cream away right now and go for a walk instead.

2. Don’t eat more than you need.
You should never feel stuffed at the end of a meal. A comfortable feeling of satisfaction is what you are looking for and keep in mind that it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that it has had enough. Your stomach will soon get used to your smaller appetite. You can still enjoy your meals and feel wonderful afterwards because you know you didn’t overindulge. Don’t eat a complete serving of everything simply because it’s there!

3. Start moving.
Trade in your couch for some fresh air and a pair of decent walking or running shoes. If you can’t or don’t want to go to the gym, exercise at home or take a walk in your neighborhood. All physical activities will burn calories so get out there and reacquaint yourself with your thinner self and your desire to be healthy and fit. Try to be active whenever you can. Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Park at the end of the parking lot instead of circling around for ten minutes trying to find a spot by the entrance. Rome wasn’t built in one day, so take it a simple step at a time.

4. Clean out your pantry.
Yes, money doesn’t grow on trees but if you can improve your health and the health of your family by throwing away a few unhealthy foods, you’ll gain a lot more than the few dollars going down the drain and into the garbage can. Throw away all the coupons for junk food. Think of all the money you’ll save by not buying it in the first place! Now get rid of those bags of chips, ice cream containers, bottles of pop and bags of cookies. If you really can’t throw them away, give them to some neighbors who don’t have weight problems. Why do you need to do that? Imagine you’re watching a good TV show and get a little hungry. If there is no junk food for you to grab, then you can’t be tempted and you won’t ingest additional calories that you didn’t need in the first place. If you really need to snack, have some raw vegetables handy with some low-fat dip.

5. Breathe in and relax.
Stress makes people smoke, drink and eat excessively. Learn to recognize stress and take actions to prevent it or deal with it when it occurs. After all, reducing your stress levels will also greatly benefit your health. Remember that you are not the only one struggling with weight and health problems. Most obese people are nervous or emotional eaters. Ask yourself how you feel and deal with the cause of your emotions instead of filling yourself up with food to compensate. If you at least use healthier snacks when you’re nervous, that’s a small step in the right direction.
