First, realize that most women lose weight more slowly than men do. Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue. Since men on average, have a higher percentage of muscle than women, they have an advantage in losing weight. A man will lose more on the same amount of calories than a woman will of the same weight. Accept this quirk of nature, but fight it by exercising to add muscle.

The Importance of a Positive Self-Image

Next, understand that a woman's self-image is often tied to her appearance. This may be neither fair nor rational, but if this is true for you, use it to your advantage. Dispel negative self-images by replacing them with projections of a new, slimmer you. You are doing something to change your weight, something that is not easy to do. Give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back for making the effort.

Finally, be patient, and realize any goal worth pursuing requires persistent effort over time. Remember that there will be periods of discouragement where you may feel like giving up.
