Fitting Fast Food into Your Weight Loss Plan

In our fast-paced society of working long weeks and being involved in nearly everything that comes our way, it can be difficult to maintain a habit of eating at home. Sometimes there is just no time, an emergency comes up, or you are just too tired to face the thought of cooking your meal at home. Can fast food be an option for those on a weight loss plan?

It is possible to occasionally eat fast food and not derail your weight loss plan. The key is limiting fast food and making menu selections that are the closest possible fit to your plan. Most fast food places do offer a menu for the more health conscious among us-plus, nutrition information is usually available if you ask for it. Also be aware that fast food generally contains far more calories than home cooked-sometimes as much as your entire daily allowance.

Below are seven steps to help you in your fast food "emergencies."

1. Check out the restaurant's website. You can usually find calories and nutritional information online. Find the best choice and stick with it.

2. On the go and not sure where to go? Check out HealthyDiningFinder.com . You can search for nearby restaurants within your price and health range.

3. Don't be afraid to special order. You can always ask for them to hold the butter or salt, put the dressing or sauces on the side, etc.

4. Say "NO!" to the desserts. While this is an obvious one, it may be one of the more difficult! If you are eating fast food, at least skip the dessert.

5. Drink water with your meal. This one will save you money and (generally speaking) 425 calories. Adding lemon to your water may help you with this.

6. Eat mindfully. Think about what you are eating. Enjoying every bite will keep you from stuffing yourself. Giving yourself enough time to eat can help you relax, which helps you to digest your food better and also can help keep you from overeating.

7. Don't ever lose sight of the big picture - Remember, your goal is a healthy diet and weight loss. Don't think in terms of all or nothing. One or two trips to your favorite fast food restaurant shouldn't discourage you enough to drop out of your plan. It may actually help to remind you that eating healthy home cooked food makes you feel better and more committed to stick to your overall weight loss goals.
