Do Low Fat Diets Work? Read This Before You Start a Low Fat Diet Plan

If you are like many people you have some of weight to lose and you figure that the best way to do it is to go on a low fat diet. After all, doesn't it make sense that if you want to get rid of fat on your body you should cut fat out of your diet? Well, yes and no.

While eating low fat food is actually healthy, you can't expect to lose weight if you go wild and eat anything that is marked as low fat and still expect to lose weight. The bad news is that low fat does not always mean low calorie. Most people who go on low fat diets still eat things like candy, low fat chips or cookies, or anything that is labeled low fat because they fall within the fat restrictions of their diet. The calories from these foods can really add up, though!

For instance, let's say you are on a low fat diet and you notice that gummy bears are fat free. Great! You can chow down on them, right? Wrong. Just 10 gummy bears have about 90 calories. Let's face it, though - most people eat more than 10 gummy bears in a sitting so odds are if you get the gummy bears you will add at least 150-180 calories to your day without getting any nutritional benefit back in return. Gummy bears are just sugar, and sugar doesn't do much for your body.

Even if you try to stick to healthy low fat foods and avoid low fat treats you can still tack on way more calories than you actually need over the course of a day. Consuming more calories than you burn definitely is not going to help you lose weight.

Rather than focusing on eating low fat foods, you should focus on eating the right kinds of fats and eating foods that give your body the nutrients that it needs. Many people are surprised to learn that you body can actually benefit from the fat that is in food since fats help our bodies to absorb vitamins including vitamins A,D,E and K.

Look for foods with monounsaturated fats like those found in plant sources like olive oil, peanut oil and canola oil. Another fat that is good is Omega-3 fat. Omega-3 fat is found in dark green vegetables, walnuts and oily fish like tuna and salmon.

Always look for foods that offer the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. Eating foods with plenty of vitamins and protein will help keep you feeling full longer which means you will eat less than you would on a low fat diet. Because you aren't feeling hungry when you eat correctly it will make it easier to avoid binging since it keeps your blood sugar more stable and you won't get those intense cravings that cause you to devour an entire package of cookies in one sitting.

If you want to lose weight quickly low fat diets are probably not the answer. There are better, faster, healthier and more efficient ways to lose weight quickly besides going on a low fat diet.
