How to Deal With Cravings

Cravings can absolutely kill a person's diet or resolve to stay healthy. Because of this, people either give up on their goals or succumb and end up feeling incredibly guilty. This guilt can then result in overeating or stress. However, if one takes the time to understand their cravings and break old habits, they can live both a healthy and happy life.

Deal with Emotions

The main reason people overeat or succumb to their cravings is that they are anxious, stressed, or unhappy. Thus, if you learn what triggers these emotions, you can then work on curbing your urge to eat certain foods. Additionally, if one learns what triggers their moods, they can then spot unhealthy patterns (i.e. eating ice cream late at night when stressed out). Dealing with emotions then results in craving control.

Moderate Food: Don't Avoid It

Don't cut out a food group from your life or avoid all treats: This is why cravings happen! Instead, make sure to have treats in moderation. You could allow yourself one treat a day or give yourself a day of the week when you can eat whatever you're craving. A healthy diet is consistent: You want to teach yourself how to eat sensibly for the rest of your life and not just for the short-term.

Get Up and Do Something

One of the best ways to deal with a craving is to distract yourself when you have this urge. Thus, if you are craving a greasy cheeseburger, go and do something with a friend instead. If you want chocolate, go for a walk. This way, you will teach yourself to stay active when you find yourself dreaming of unhealthy foods.

Get Your Drink On

When you feel like you might succumb to a craving, try drinking water instead. Most people don’t get enough water in the day, and this water may in fact fill you up. Additionally, what many folks don't know is that we sometimes think our cravings mean we're hungry when they could instead mean we are dehydrated. Keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day, and you'll find yourself experiencing hunger cravings less than before.

Keep Healthy Foods Around You

When you experience a craving, it may help to appease it but in a healthy way. For example, if you are craving candy, try to eat some fruit. This way, you are getting some sugar in your body but are doing it the healthy way. Similarly, if you find yourself craving pizza, try eating some cheese and crackers.
