3 Weight Loss Myths To Avoid

It goes without saying that for many people, losing weight is different. You've probably tried several diet programs only to fail to reach your goals. Add to the mix all the different myths about weight loss and it's easy to see how tough it can be. Here are 3 myths you can put to rest once and for all.

1. Being overweight is genetic - You just have to accept it.

How many times have you heard this one? "I'm overweight because it runs in my family. There is no hope for me."

This is a common misconception, and excuse in many cases, to quit on any weight loss program. The truth is, there is no such thing as "fat genes" that are passed down in your DNA.

We are overweight because of our food choices and our lifestyle. We make unhealthy choices from early on in life and continue in this lifestyle for years and years. In almost all cases, if your parents were overweight, you took what you learned from them and have been doing the same thing.

Being overweight is not in your genetic code. You can overcome this issue and change your life.

2. Skipping meals is the best way to lose weight fast.

This is another myth that many people surprisingly believe to be true. Unfortunately, the facts point to a different story. Medical studies have shown that those who skip meals during the day put on more weight than those who ate 5-6 "smaller meals" each day. (This is also the concept behind Fat Loss 4 Idiots)

The reason for this is pretty obvious when you really think about it. Since you haven't eaten, when you do eat you tend to overeat. Makes sense, you're hungry!

It has also been shown that eating small meals each day, your metabolism runs higher and burns more fat.

3. Never eat late at night or you will get fat

I'm sure you have heard this one before many times, but let's take a second look at why this can be a big weight loss myth.

While it is true that if you make a "run for the border" to your local fast food joint and eat 4-5 tacos at 11:00PM and then go straight to bed, some of that is going to become fat.

Having a late night snack of fresh fruit or other sensible foods is not a problem. Even having one taco is not going to do serious damage to your diet. The key is to not overeat and consume dense high-carb foods right before going to bed.
