Weight loss is one of the most popular New Year's Resolutions in the U.S.A. Born and raised in Europe, I understand why losing weight is a major challenge for overweight Americans. Everywhere you go here, food seems to be staring at you-inviting (or should I say begging?) you to buy and eat. If I go for a stroll downtown, I find myself having to pass by many irresistible restaurants and diners and before I know it, I find myself eating a snack... Not because I am hungry-in fact I might have just eaten lunch or dinner at home-but because everything looks so irresistible. And it's cheap too. Who wants to say "no" to that $1.75 delicious muffin? Who can?

I say, we can! It is possible to lose weight while living in the States. Although I do believe it would be easier to lose weight in Europe! Try to get a snack-to-go in The Netherlands, where I was born and raised... Besides the fact that the on-the-go mentality, as I call it, is barely present in the land of tulips, windmills and wooden clogs (and no, we don't actually wear those!) it takes ages to order a snack in my native country. The Netherlands don't value eating outdoors as much as the Americans. If you would like to order a snack, you wait to be seated and then for the server to take your order, after which you eat your snack in the restaurant. Ordering a coffee and snack in the U.S.A. takes you minutes. In The Netherlands, you can count on at least half-an-hour. That is if you are lucky... Chances are, if you have to wait so long for your muffin or cheesecake, you are going to pass ...

Although I welcome Americans in my coaching practice in The Netherlands, I do understand that moving to Europe is not an option for most Americans struggling to lose weight. However, learning how we "Dutchies" (in general of course) deal with food might give you a life-line or two to resist all those delicious snacks. Losing weight and making sure it doesn't find its way back to you will be more successful if you change your life-style from the inside out than from the outside in!

1. Most Dutch people prepare and eat 3 meals a day at home or prepare a lunch to take to the office. Self prepared meals, of course, are healthier than eating outdoors.
2. Most Dutch people go to the supermarket only once a week and buy all they need for the entire week. If you limit your grocery shopping to once a week, you resist the temptation of buying, and thus eating, too much.
3. Most Dutch people eat dinner at home, while seated. Dinner is a social and not an on-the-go activity. If you take your time, set the table, enjoy the company of your family or friends, you will experience that eating is more fulfilling.
4. Most Dutch people have healthy food in their fridge, always, preventing you from eating outdoors.
