For people who commit themselves seriously to a weight loss program it is important to look at and carefully evaluate their eating habits. The purpose of a weight loss diet should not be primarily to lose weight but should be to establish long term eating habits that will result in permanent control of weight problems. If those habits are learned, the weight will decrease in a slow and permanent manner. It appears that for most people who go on a diet, the goal is to drop the weight so that they can go back to their old eating habits as soon as the get the weight off. The end result is they play a YoYo game, getting the weight off and then, only within a few months, regain the lost weight and, an additional 10 or more pounds.

Many well meaning dieters think that eating fewer meals each day, perhaps only one meal each day is the answer. However, this does not work well because their metabolic rate (the rate at which they burn calories) drops way down between each of these 1 or 2 meals each day. As a result, with the consumption of a meal, it takes their metabolism perhaps an hour to catch up to the level of calorie intake allowing some of the calories in each meal, to be converted to fat before the metabolic rate increases to a level to burn the calories. If a person divides his calorie intake into 6 feedings a day, the metabolic rate remains at a relatively higher level and will burn up the calories more efficiently. Using this technique, people can lose weight eating more calories than they consume when eating only one, two or three meals per day.
