Hoodia is a genus of succulent plants very similar to the cactus and Gordonii is a variety of this. It has been traditionally used for many years by the San people of Southern Africa as an appetite suppressant, thirst quencher and cure-all for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, abdominal cramps, hemorrhoids and even tuberculosis.

Hoodia came to the attention of the Western world back in 1937, but it wasn't until 2004 when the "60 Minutes" program for CBS did an investigation into Gordonii Hoodia that it was really catapulted into the limelight. The correspondent ate some Hoodia and reported that she did not feel hungry or thirsty for the rest of the day. She did not experience any side effects and stated "I'd have to say, it did work".

HOW DOES IT HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

There are many different types of Hoodia but it is only the Gordonii Hoodia which has been shown to be an effective appetite suppressant.

Deep inside the brain, there is a part called the Hypothalmus, inside which are nerve cells which are able to sense and monitor glucose sugar. When we eat, blood sugar levels rise because of the food and the cells in the Hypothalmus send messages saying that we have eaten and are full. Hoodia seems to contain a molecule which is over 10,000 more active than glucose and triggers off this mechanism-the nerve cells fire as if we have eaten. However, we have not eaten and nor do we want to.

Trials on animals have shown that they naturally reduce the amount of calories ingested by between 30 and 50%. With humans, clinical trials in Britain have shown that Gordonii Hoodia may reduce the appetite by hundreds of calories a day.

Other diet supplements work by trying to increase the rates at which the body burns calories. This means that the heart rate is increased, making it have to work harder which increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

All conventional diets work by reducing the amount of calories ingested, be that by reduced fat/ reduced carbs or some other type of "fad" diet which encourages the dieter to remove whole food groups from their diets. The principle is basically the same.

What makes Hoodia so different is that it actually works to prevent weight gain by naturally reducing the amount we eat. Hoodia provides a powerful weapon against hunger, enabling the user to resist temptation.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

There are no published side effects. However, it would be sensible to take care if you suffer from any condition where eating regular meals is essential, such as diabetes. In addition, it is important to ensure that fluid intake is monitored and a conscious effort is made to drink enough liquid throughout the day.
