Weight Loss Goals - Do You Actually Walk The Dog?

Weight loss goals - Is your idea of exercising your dog, opening the back door and letting him out? Is your idea of exercise for you, getting up to let the dog out?

Why not combine these two activities, and both of you get some exercise. I am not trying to be funny or smart, but I was doing this same thing too!

You know the scenario, you come home from work, and you are tired and hungry, and your dog is jumping up and down at the door to go out. So, you open the door and let him out, or in my case, take my dogs to their large pen and then go back in the house.

Your dog runs around the yard and does its business, and then is looking for you for some fun, but you have gone back in the house to sit and "recover" or snack.

Here is a great opportunity to feel a bit better after work. I know how tired you feel when you first get home, but believe it or not, a quick snack, and put the leash on the dog, and a quick walk around the block, will actually make you feel more energized.

You can trick yourself into these walks as well. Tonight, find the dog leash, and put it near the door. Get a quick snack ready that you can grab when you get home, and have your sneakers or running shoes near the door. Then tell yourself, I will just go down to the end of the street. That won't seem like to big a chore, and you change your shoes, eat your snack, get the leash on the dog and off you go.

Once you get to the end of the street, you maybe are feeling a little bit brighter, and you say "maybe just down this other street and then back", next thing you know you have gone around the block a couple of times.

Your dog is super happy, he/she gets to spend time with you. You get to practice your dog training, and you get some fresh air and exercise yourself.

Dog parks are a great place for dogs, but not always the best for the owner. I see lots of owners leaning over the fence at the dog park socializing with other dog owners, while the dogs are running and playing, the owners are not. So, I wouldn't consider the dog park as exercise, unless you have to walk two blocks to get to it! In that case, it is exercise.

Your dog, will not act up with pent up energy, and you will feel less stressed. Your evenings will feel much better. If you are fully booked every evening with activities with your kids, then after work may be your only real window for this quick exercise. In this case, see if you can organize dinner to be cooking while you are out.. Or plan what will be for dinner the night before. The more planning you do, the more likely you are to fit in this special time with your pooch, and get fit yourself
