Was Oprah Ever On The Medifast Diet? Is That How She Lost All That Weight?

I've lost a noticable amount of weight on Medifast. Sometimes when people are asking me about my diet, they shake their heads in acknowledgment and say something like, "Is that the diet that Oprah lost tons of weight on?"

The answer is no. I understand that they are thinking of the time that Oprah lost over 65 pounds and got into size 10 Calvin Klein jeans. This was in 1988 following a four month fast, during which time she consumed only liquid shakes.

Today, there are still severe, physician supervised liquid – only diets. These generally require a prescription and are used in very severe cases, as a last ditch effort before surgery.

These plans are certainly out there, but medifast is not one of them. I suppose because this plan offers it's very popular and filling shakes as part of the program, people sometimes mistakenly assume it is composed of liquids. I can tell you from experience that it is not.

Although this diet has plans for women, men, and diabetics, most people (myself included) are on the five plus one plan. This means we eat six times per day. For five of these meals, we chose from over 70 food choices. Among these are regular solid foods like chili, stew, eggs, and oatmeal. Yes, there are shakes and soups. There are also protein bars that are quite popular, but these are only a few of the options.

We also consume one main, substantial "lean and green meal" that we make ourselves. This meal consists of lean protein and veggies. As you can see, my diet definitely includes real solid foods and lots of them.

In researching this article, I came upon reports of obese individuals who had repeatedly failed on solid foods diets and therefore had decided to go on a medifast liquid diet, basically consuming between 400 and 800 calories per day by only drinking shakes or fruit drinks. They intended to do this for three months and then return to a solid diet.

I can see where one might assume that consuming just liquids might lead to dramatic results. However, I am living proof that you can eat plenty of solid foods and also lose a large amount of weight safely.

Oprah has publicly admitted several times that she regrets the liquid diet. Perhaps if she had known dramatic, yet safe weight loss was possible with solid foods, she would've gone that route instead.
