The Zone is a weight loss Diet by Barry Sears, Ph.D. and is based on the idea that we should eat the way ancient civilizations did by putting an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and meat. This diet does not deny carbs, but does limit them. In fact The Zone is based on a percentages formula that includes 40% carbohydrates, 30% fat and 30% protein.

The diet was designed to limit the amount of insulin in the body because when a large amount of insulin is in the body that can lead to a build up of fat, which leads to obesity and then of course medical problems such as diabetes. The carbs that are allowed on the diet are obtained from eating fruits and vegetables and also from the fat from olive oil and other monounsaturated fats.

You can lose a significant amount of weight if you follow The Zone diet properly.

Individuals on the diet are encouraged to eat every five hours. The diet is a low-calorie diet with most females taking in about 1300 calories daily.

Most dieticians endorse The Zone, but others say it is too difficult for most people to be able to follow. The diet can be costly because of the amount of protein in the diet. The American Heart Association condemns The Zone diet because it says it has been linked to heart disease. Dr. Sear's has a theory that starchy vegetables leads to weight gain. Most of the claims made by The Zone have not been verified by studies and most see The Zone as a diet fad instead of a serious weight loss program.
