An Explanation Of How Medifast Works

I consider medifast to be not only the most successful diet I have ever tried, but a very convenient one that I have been able to stick with. I'm often asked how it works, what the experience is like, and how hard it is. Hopefully, this article will help to answer these questions.

A Brief Overview Of Medifast: Although the company has many different plans (men's, women's, diabetic, heart health, and a momentum line that boosts your metabolism), this article will discuss the five plus one plan that I (and most dieters who are on this program) are on. The 5 plus 1 plan requires that you eat six times per day (five of the plan's prepackaged meals and one "lean and green meal" that you prepare yourself.)

This may seem difficult or time consuming, but it really isn't. The program's meals are small and require very little assembly so it's pretty quick and easy to grab a meal and go. Plus, eating so often helps a bit with hunger and cravings. The lean and green meal is really just lean protein and veggies or salad. This can be as simple or as elaborate as you chose to make it. I chose to make it as quick and easy as possible by using bagged salad and stir fry and preparing my lean protein on a George Foreman grill.

There are about 70 food choices. In addition to the popular shakes and bars, the plan offers pancakes, icecream, brownies, eggs, oatmeals, stews, chilis, cappuccinos, puddings, etc., to name only a few. Each food option has a good deal of flavors available as well.

Medifast And Ketosis (Why This Program Is So Effective): The foods on this diet are low in calories and carbs and high in protein. (But, as stated before, you aren't eating meat and eggs all day.) This puts your body in a metabolic state called ketosis which tricks your body into burning it's own fat (since excess carbohydrates are not available.) This is the same mechanism by which Atkins, South Beach and other low carb diets work. I believe that this is what makes this plan effective for most people.

How Hard Is It To Be On Medifast? What Is Being On This Program Like?: This is probably the most common question that I am asked. The answer is probably going to depend on your own personality, but for me, (who is an admitted junk food junkie who adores Starbucks and hates eating healthy) it wasn't initially as bad as I thought. Admittedly, it takes some getting used to as you are eating small, preplanned meals, but for the most part, most of the foods tastes pretty decent and I add fat and sugar free additions (sugar free syrups, fat free cheese, sour cream, etc.) to add taste and variety. For example, I make wraps or omelets with the scrambled eggs and use the pudding to make muffins. There are many recipes like this available.

Luckily, results come pretty quickly as this makes it easier to remain committed. Seeing results was necessary for me to stick with it. From then on, I really didn't have a problem. I've learned that nothing taste as good as thin feels.

I find that people who love to prepare their own foods have the most problems. Medifast really takes a lot of the preparation and guess work out of preparing your own food. People who are "foodies" that love preparing and eating elaborate meals have a bit of an adjustment to make, but it's certainly not impossible with a bit of patience. This was not an issue for me as I'm more about convenience and results and have never been overly involved with (or cared a lot about) food preparation.
