Some Observations On Motivations

Low Fat Diet Plans:

Some insurance companies are becoming aware that they can motivate people to lose weight. The September issue of Inc. magazine described how a Santa Ana, California, insurance company, proposed a contract where employees agreed to participate for a year and try to lose at least fifteen pounds.

Employees have an option of taking behavior modification classes at a local hospital. If they lose the minimum number of pounds (there's no maximum limit), the fee for the course is reimbursed by the company. And for each pound of weight they lose, the company pays them $3!

It would be marvelous if more companies became involved that way. But until they do, you can rely on the group efforts of such organizations as I've mentioned. Don't forget, though, that it's still up to you in the end.

There are people who think they are accomplishing something positive by taking diuretics to help them reduce. Diuretics help excrete excess water our bodies may hold from time to time. These are frequently used by women during that bloaty time of their menstrual cycle.

As long as you are aware that it's water you are losing and not fat, you're all right. I know, I know. Who cares what is coming off as long as the scale indicates a loss? I understand that feeling. But if you depend upon water loss to get thin, you will be discouraged after you have gotten rid of all excess water and there's still the hard work of getting rid of the fat.

Always remember that the diuretics are aids to your reducing plan, if you decided to use them. But they cannot accomplish anything without your help. There is the danger of losing potassium while taking diuretics so be sure to consult a doctor before using them. He may want you to supplement what your body may be losing, or he may prescribe one which has potassium added.

Finally, if you have a high uric acid count, diuretics can raise it dangerously and trigger the onset of gout.

This brings to mind an amusing story about water. A fellow I know could only get motivated to diet if it involved competition. He had two friends who were massively overweight too so it was easy to get a wager going. The plan was to weigh in, nude, each week and whoever lost the most would be paid $10 a pound by the other two.

This sly fellow figured all was fair in love, war and weight reduction contests. He knew how to win. The evening before the first weigh-in, he started drinking water. He drank glass after glass. He continued in the morning until his friends arrived. He literally could hear the water sloshing around in his stomach. He had to urinate in the worst way, but he was determined not to until they had all weighed in.

When the others arrived they stripped down. They didn't notice my friend's discomfort. He even offered them a can of diet soda which they refused. Then, each of the three got on the scale. One of the others was skeptical. He couldn't believe that my friend weighed as much as the scale read. "You don't have metal weights between your toes?" he asked. But since they were all nude, they could detect nothing fishy.
