How to Make Healthy Treats with Yonanas

If you are a dieter with a sweet tooth, you know how hard it is to stick to your weight loss program when those late night sugar cravings hit. In fact, if you're like me, the cravings hit in the late afternoon, again after dinner and then stick with me until I go to bed. Sound familiar?
If you are a dieter with a sweet tooth, you know how hard it is to stick to your weight loss program when those late night sugar cravings hit. In fact, if you're like me, the cravings hit in the late afternoon, again after dinner and then stick with me until I go to bed. Sound familiar?

Of course, there are low-fat and low-sugar sweet treats available at the grocery store. But I generally find that those foods don't taste like the real thing and I end up overeating them because I'm not satisfied. So I was excited to try Yonanas, a cool kitchen gadget that makes soft serve "ice cream" out of frozen bananas or any of your favorite fruits.

The most difficult thing about using Yonanas is waiting for your fruit to ripen and freeze before you use the device. You can use any frozen fruit, but overripe bananas provide the creamiest texture so I waited the 2-3 days for my bananas to ripen, then froze the fruit for 24 hours as the instructions suggest.
Once the fruit is ready, Yonanas is fun and simple to use. Follow any of the recipes that come with the product, try the recipes provided on the website, or create your own flavors. Simply insert the fruit into a chute, press it into the machine and a creamy soft serve treat pours into your bowl. I made Caramel Apple Yonanas (flavored with dates), Chocolate Yonanas, Peach Yonanas and Grapefruit Yonanas. I also tried banana-free recipes with strawberries and peaches.

Does Yonanas Taste Good?

Soft serve Yonanas does not taste like soft serve ice cream. But it does have the texture of soft serve ice cream and the treat is sweet and delicious. If you love bananas, you will love the banana-based recipes. But even if bananas aren't your thing, you'll find recipes to suit your tastes. Banana-free recipes like Mango Sorbet, Melon Sorbet and Watermelon Blueberry Sorbet are best for people who prefer fruity flavors without the extra sweetness.

The nutritional content of your Yonanas treat will, of course, depend on what you put in the recipe. I splurged and added Dark Chocolate Dreams Peanut Butter to my first batch of Yonanas. It was delicious, but the calories in peanut butter are substantial so the treat wasn't necessarily the best diet-friendly recipe.

In general, however, Yonanas is better for your weight loss program than ice-cream - even if you add higher calorie ingredients. For example, my indulgent chocolate peanut butter recipe contained 98 calories and about 3 grams of fat per half cup serving. A single half cup serving of Haagen Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream contains 340 calories and 23 grams of fat.

So how does Yonanas compare to low-fat ice cream? The calorie and fat content are almost the same, but the nutritional profile of Yonanas is better because you are only eating fresh fruit without artificial flavors, corn syrup and other additives. Of course, bananas are high in sugar, but they provide important nutritional benefits. Eileen McHale, a professionally trained chef and co-inventor of Yonanas points out that "bananas and are high in fiber and potassium, an important electrolyte, and the balance of sugars and fiber help provide a valuable and filling boost of energy in your day."

Diet-Friendly Yonanas Tips and Tricks

When you make Yonanas, it's best to make a full recipe in order for the flavors to blend properly. That means that you'll use two full bananas and whatever other ingredients the recipe calls for. You end up with almost two cups of the soft serve treat in your bowl - a total of roughly 250 calories or more.
For most people who are trying to lose weight, that may be too many calories for a sweet treat, especially if you eat Yonanas often. My tip? Enjoy your Yonanas treat the same way you enjoy any indulgent treat - in moderation. Make a full recipe and freeze at least half for another day.

In addition, try different recipes - both the banana recipes and the no-banana recipes - so that you gain the nutritional benefits of a wide range of fruits. Skip the toppings that you would normally add to ice cream and simply enjoy the creamy texture and the fresh taste of fruit.

Buy Yonanas at Walmart or online at Yonanas.com. Prices start at $49.99 for the basic machine. Accessories, tips and recipes are also available on the website.
