Why Do We Eat? 1

Caffeine is usually associated with negative side effects and long-term health risks, however many are not knowledgeable about the causes of those health risks and preventions. In addition, people are not familiar with the benefits of caffeine and the dosage that is appropriate for your physical and mental health to be stable.

Caffeine is a substance that is bitter, and is mostly found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, and some nuts and in certain medicines. The reason why many drink coffee to raise their energy levels and make them more alert is that caffeine affects the body’s metabolism, including the central nervous system.

You have just finished eating dinner. You leave the restaurant, and while crossing the street, you come across a bakery store and smell of muffins, croissants, and coffee fill the air. You go inside and buy an espresso along with a slice of cake. Were you hungry? No.

The reason that you ate a slice of cake and drank an espresso was not because you were hungry but because the food had stimulated your senses. In this case, the foods within the bakery had appealed to your sense of smell. Other factors that stimulate us to eat are the sense of sight and the texture of foods. However, the sense that is most appealing to most people is the sense of taste. Certain tastes, such as sweet foods, are universally appealing, while the taste of foods like broccolis are more individually appealing.

Why do we eat when we are not hungry?

The above factors motivate us to eat, however it wasn’t hunger that made you go into that bakery. It was appetite. Appetite is the psychological desire to consume specific foods. It is aroused by social and environmental situations. It is NOT related to hunger, but rather to the pleasant sensation associated with food. Hunger, on the other hand, is a physiological sensation that drives us to find food and eat it.

Therefore, hunger is associated with negative and unpleasant feelings in which the physical drive to eat is very strong, and is not connected to a certain type of food.

Knowing about the difference between hunger and appetite will be very beneficial towards weight loss. If you tend to confuse the two, it can lead to health problems. People usually get in the habit of feeding their body whatever foods it desires; eating when you have appetite and not when you’re hungry will cause weight gain. Below are some helpful ways to ensure that you don’t overeat:

1. Before your meal, drink a glass of water.
2. Don’t ever be starving when you’re going to eat. You should be hungry, but not so much that you end up eating a feast.
3. Chew your food very slowly.
4. Halfway through your meal, pause, and take a couple minutes rest to see if you are still hungry.
5. Don’t be extremely full after you finish eating, eat in a way that you still have some room left.
6. After your meal, drink a glass of water.

If you are successful in maintaining a diet that is based on only hunger and not appetite, you will always remain at your desired body weight, and even lose weight by eating healthy foods. The important thing is to be aware of when you are no longer hungry. So next time you come across a bakery be careful not to be temped by the sweet aroma of chocolate, coffee or cake!
