Is Your Child's Weight Healthy?

Be a role model. The health and weight of your child is a direct result of your health and weight. If one parent is overweight, the child has a 25% chance of becoming overweight or obese as they get older. If both parents are overweight the risk of becoming an overweight adult jumps to 50%.

Be encouraging. Nobody likes to hear negative feedback. Make sure you talk to your child in an uplifting and compassionate way. Instead of saying, ‘Lose weight’, say, ‘Let’s be healthy and start taking care of our bodies’. Focus on the foods you can eat, not the ones that you cannot. Say, ‘Let’s go pick out fruits and make a fruit salad,’ not ‘Don’t eat that.’

Make healthy eating a family affair. A family that eats together, eats better, according to a recent study in the journal Archives of Family Medicine. If children frequently have dinner with their families they have healthier diets than their peers who do not, also stated in the journal. Your fridge and cabinets should be full of healthy snacks such as fresh fruit, low-fat cheeses, nuts, and other items that everyone can snack on.

Eat breakfast. To maximize the alertness of your children while they are at school, be sure to start their day with a breakfast including protein, starch, and fat. Weight loss is more difficult for people who skip breakfast than those who do not, studies have shown.

Make time for physical activity. Enjoy physical activity together as a family. Take your children on a half-hour walk after dinner when the weather permits, and turn this physical activity into something that they look forward to. If you can afford it, enroll your kids in dancing or a sporting activity that they enjoy because they need to enjoy it to keep doing it. It would be great if you could even just play some dance music in the house and have a family dance party!

Refrain from saying the word diet. Putting your child on a diet could very easily drive them into an eating disorder – whether it is binge or closet eating, or another disorder. The easiest and most effective ways to lose weight and keep it off are simple lifestyle changes.

Be sure not to over-portion your meals. To keep away from overeating with buffet and family-style meals, try to portion out the meals on their individual dishes for your family. It is difficult to keep your eyes from being bigger than your actual appetite when you are presented too much food. Turn away from your first inkling to go for seconds, and then ask yourself if you are really hungry.
