MYTH-1: A strict diet can help you lose weight.
Some people have this notion that if they stick to their diet, which usually means eating less food, they will lose weight. This is definitely a wrong move because you will deprive your body of the fuel it needs. When the body runs out of fuel, it will send signals to the brain that it needs refuelling; that signal is felt as hunger pangs. Instinctively, dieting people will eat more to satisfy their hunger. It is not uncommon to see strict dieters gain weight after a few months of dieting.
The key to lose weight is to change the type of food, not the frequency of meals.
Myth 2: Certain foods, like grapefruit,celery,acai berry or cabbage soup, can burn fat and make you lose weight.
Fact: No foods can burn fat. Some foods with caffeine may speed up your metabolism (the way your body uses energy, or calories) for a short time, but they do not cause weight loss.
MYTH 3: LOW-FAT SNACKS
Researchers at Cornell University in the US found that people consume up to 50 per cent more calories when they eat low-fat versions of snack foods compared with the standard versions.These low fat snacks are only 11% low in fat.
Brian Wansink, who directed the research, says: “Often the fat-free version is not much lower in calories than the regular version – often only about 11 per cent.
“Low-fat labels just trick people into eating more.”
Myth 4: Skipping meals is a good way to lose weight.
Fact: Studies show that people who skip breakfast and eat fewer times during the day tend to be heavier than people who eat a healthy breakfast and eat four or five times a day. This may be because people who skip meals tend to feel hungrier later on, and eat more than they normally would. It may also be that eating many small meals throughout the day helps people control their appetites.
Tip: Eat small meals throughout the day that include a variety of healthy, low-fat, low-calorie foods
Myth 5: Fast foods are always an unhealthy choice and you should not eat them when you are dieting.
Fact: Fast foods can be part of a healthy weight loss program with a little bit of know-how.
Tip: Avoid supersize combo meals, or split one with a friend. Sip on water or nonfat milk instead of soda. Choose salads and grilled foods, like a grilled chicken breast sandwich or small hamburger. Fried foods, like French fries and fried chicken, are high in fat and calories, so order them only once in a while, order a small portion, or split an order with a friend. Also, use only small amounts of high-fat, high-calorie toppings, like:cheese,salad dressings etc.
Myth 6:: Guzzling water before meal will not help in losing weight and has been scientifically proven. They found no link between water intake and weight. But soup could be a helpful tool in losing weight. The study, published in the journal Nutrition, shows women who eat a lot of water-rich foods, such as soup, had slightly smaller waists.
