Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome - How This Condition Can Be Managed

Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS as it is commonly known can be a traumatic problem for the many women facing this disorder. What is it exactly and how best to manage it becomes the question on these ladies lips.

It is a condition which can be difficult to diagnose as the syptoms are many and varied. The most common signs include weight gain, mood swings, infertility, hirsutism ( hair growth on body) acne, irregular periods and lack of energy. Quite a nasty collection of problems and for many girls with these symptoms they can be extremely debilitating. It's bad enough to be overweight without all these other difficulties invading your body and for the single girl it would appear that everything is against her. From heavy, painful periods to having hair on parts of her body that no woman should have to be concerned about, to acne continuing for what seems like forever; these are only a few of the problems she is faced with daily or monthly as the case may be. Regarding the heavy periods, some women don't even have a period for months while for others it is just extremely heavy every time. This in itself can lead to lack of energy as her iron levels plummet.

It has been noted that insulin resistance could be one of the underlying causes of PCOS and this is directly at the root of the weight gain. Unfortunately dieting in the usual fashion will not budge the weight for the woman suffering from PCOS. Some doctors recommend a low GI diet while others prefer the low carbohydrate lifestyle. Whatever works for the individual is clearly the best way to eat as unless the weight is dropped substantially this young woman will have major difficulties becoming pregnant should this be her desire.

This really is a very cruel thing to be afflicted with and for the ladies who eventually find a supportive partner it is best they understand just what their wife/partner is coping with and how it can affect her personality. Depression is frequently a side issue of all these other problems. One would hardly be surprised at a woman feeling low and stressed especially for the ladies who find they need to get rid of facial hair before facing the public each day; what could be more embarrassing? This hair growth problem can occur on many parts of her body and the razor becomes one of her best friends.

PCOS is actually more common than one might think and is actually large ovaries with multiple cysts. It is suspected that as many as one in four women in civilised countries suffer from at least some of these symtoms and are not even aware of the fact. If young girls are suspected of having this syndrome it is better to be addressed before puberty as this can bring about lifelong benefits.
