7 Ways To Tell If Your Body Is Too Acid

Your body's pH has a lot to say about how healthy you are. Measured on a scale of 0 to 14, pH scores at the low end are acid and on the high end alkaline. Right in the middle at 7 is what your body needs to achieve to be really healthy, while scores lower than 6.8, or higher than 7.4 put you at risk. Unfortunately the typical American diet high in processed foods, sugar and red meat is very acid and makes it difficult. to achieve pH balance.

The costs of an overly acid body are high opening the door to a long list of diseases and conditions including weight gain and blood sugar issues such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

There are several ways in which acid bodies cause weight gain. Acidity causes inflammation in your organs and tissues, and fat is a good form of protection from this kind of damage. For this reason, your body will produce and hang onto fat to buffer you from the worst effects of the acid. The more acid you are the more fat you produce. Acid also damages the cells causing them to be more insulin resistant, and may damage organs such as the thyroid leading to inefficient metabolism.

How do you know if you are too acid?

  1. Test your urine or saliva with pH test strips available many places online. They come with a color coded chart. Hold the strip in a stream of urine or wet it with saliva, then compare it to the chart.
  2. Too many acid foods. Acid foods should be 30% or less of your diet, if not chances are you are too acid. Some of the most common acid foods are red meat, coffee and tea, sodas (diet or not), processed foods, sugar, canned foods, most grains including white or whole wheat flour, peanuts eggs, cheese or dairy and alcohol. As a rule of thumb, if its not fresh and alive its probably acid. Alkaline foods which should be at least 70% of your diet including vegetables, some fruits such as lemons, grapefruit, avocado and tomatoes, almonds, coconut or olive oil, green and ginger tea.
  3. Stress. Stress hormones promote acidity. If you are chronically stressed, and especially if you don't eat well, you are very likely too acid.
  4. Medication, either over the counter or prescription weighs in on the acid side. If you take them you need to be especially careful about the foods you eat.
  5. Personal care products. If you buy these at a grocery or big box store without scruti nizing the label, they are probably loaded with toxins. Switch to organic products. Visit the website for the Environmental Working Group for more info.
  6. Too little exercise. If you do little or no exercise you are probably too acid.
  7. Chronic conditions. If you experience chronic health challenges and conditions such as allergies, fatigue, headaches, colds or flu, depression, diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis or digestive problems you are probably too acid.

There are few things you can do for your health that are more important than balancing your pH. Especially if weight loss seems to elude you, and you want a natural remedy for weight loss, this is a good place to start.
