5 Facts About How Cold Affects Fat

More and more scientists are finding connections between cold and fat. It appears that cold can turn white fat – the kind we don’t want – into beige (white fat turning into brown fat) or brown fat. Just like there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. There is good fat – the brown fat. It helps us burn calories and dispose of excess sugar in the blood. It is thought that brown fat might help fight obesity and Type 2 diabetes. More, it is being shown that cold can actually kill fat cells and can be used as a non-evasive way to sculpt the body.

Here are 5 Facts about Cold and Fat:

1. Sleep Cold and Burn Calories? New research from the National Institute of Health showed that sleeping in a cool room could have benefits. Heathy men slept in a room cooled to 66-degrees for a month and tests showed that it increased their stores of calorie-buring brown fat.

2. How Much Cold? It might not have to be too much. In another study, people were exposed to temperatures of 59 to 60 degrees for two to six hours over 10 consecutive days. There was an immediate increase in brown fat activity.

3. Cool Shaping Is A New Body Shaping Process. Rather than an invasive procedure like liposuction, cool sculpting reduces the number of fat cells while it eliminates problem areas that don’t go away with diet. For example, it can be used to shape heavy thighs or reduce love handles. It cools the target area so that the fat cells crystalize and then are expelled by the body over the next two to four months.

4. There’s A Difference between weight loss and fat reduction. When you lose weight, your fat cells shrink but they don’t go away. They’re waiting for you to slip up on your eating habits and they’ll plumb right back up. When you reduce fat cells, they’re gone. This is why cool shaping can work in problem areas.

5. Brown Fat May Mean Less Weight Gain. When brown fat was created in mice, the mice with the brown fat had 30% less weight gain than other mice being fed the same high-calories diet. Early studies show this may also be true in humans!

The next time you shiver, it may not be a bad thing. There is now some belief that an outdoor winter workout might not only burn calories; it might help create good fat. That’s still in the discovery stage, but scientists Harvard have proven that cool shaping – now known as CoolSculpting with a capital “C” and “S” really can destroy fat cells to address problem areas without surgery. If that interests you, check with a medical weight loss center that offers the procedure. Being cold may soon be seen in a whole new light!
