How to Stop Eating When Bored?

There are lots of ways to learn how to stop eating when bored. In fact, over 87% of overeating is a result of us having nothing better to do at that moment in time, so we resort to eating or drinking to consume our boredom or to fill in our “free time”.

Here’s the thing though... if you eat when you are bored and not when your body is truly hungry then you are consuming extra calories that will eventually lead to unwanted weight gain (if not already).

Trust me, you are definitely not alone in this struggle and pretty much everyone is guilty of eating out of pure boredom almost on a daily basis. However, if you don’t learn how to stop eating when bored and you’re actually trying to get a hold of your weight and shed a few extra pounds then you’re only climbing an uphill battle.

So how can you disassociate food from being the source of comfort and company when you are bored?

Well there are a few suggestions that I have and that I have personally used and have and success with:

  1. First, if you are so used to solid foods, start by trying to replace with a beverage instead. Opt for a low-calorie (preferably water) drink. Did you know that most of our hunger is actually due to our bodies being dehydrated? Try drinking an 8-oz. glass of water and see if this helps suppress your “hunger”. 9 times out of 10 it will. Without a word of doubt it is one of the best tools to teach someone who needs to learn how to stop eating when bored.
  2. If you’re someone who likes to chew something in order to feel satisfied, try replacing food with gum. Peppermint is a natural stimulant (it actually has a long list of health benefits) and it can help kick-start you back into "go-mode" and get you motivated out of the boredom.
  3. Get moving. Avoid the act of eating and DO something instead. Take a walk outside. Don’t let the rain stop you! Fresh air and exercise is the best solution to learn how to stop eating when bored. The benefits are amazing, and especially if you’re seeking to lose weight this is a MUST in your weight loss plan. If you think it’s too hard to fit in 25-45 minutes of exercise a day (or at least 5 days a week) then you are going to find it very difficult to get in the kind of shape you deserve.
  4. Avoid watching television. Period. When we are bored we tend to turn on the t.v.; we sit like zombies and we eat unconsciously and over indulge ALL because we are bored. Read and drink a cup of tea instead. Reading is not only good for your brain but for your intelligence and your ability to have an open mind about a variety of topics, including topics that you are interested such as health and lifestyle. Reading this article is just one step in the right direction to learn how to stop eating when bored. Educate yourself using a book instead of always relying on t.v.

Eating from boredom is proven to be a type of emotional eating. There’s no physical need, just emotional. It is a silent and very socially accepted form of food addiction. However, for the millions of obese adults and young children who are eating too much too often the problem needs to be addressed and solutions implemented.
