Commonsense Weight Management

Many people find it relatively easy to lose weight. Some can do it just by cutting out certain foods and eliminating sodas and other sugary drinks.

The sad fact is that losing weight is the easy part; controlling your weight is a dog. Most dieters fail to maintain the weight they lost and we are not talking about a small percentage either. Researchers claim that the number is close to 95% I personally believe that you have one over 90% of the battle if you can find a way to manage your weight. I must have lost over 500 lbs in my life but sadly enough it has been the same 40 to 50 pounds over and over again.

I won't harangue you about the dangers of yo-yo dieting since you are probably aware of it anyway, Suffice it to say that gaining and losing weight over and over again takes its toll.

Yo Yo No Mo'

The trick is to lose weight and keep it off. Tons of things are written about losing weight and I personally could show you a half a dozen ways that have worked well for me, but very little time is spent on weight management or maintenance. I guess this is due to the fact that there isn't money to be made in weight management.

Don't get me wrong, making money is a good thing as long as it isn't the main thing. I, myself, like making money by connecting people to solutions but I can honestly say that I get the most satisfaction from helping people succeed in life.

It took me a long time to realize that permanent solutions to weight problems requires permanent changes to eating and exercise habits. I know that it seems logically inescapable but somehow it escaped me. I would happily lose the weight only to find myself back at the start 6 months to a year later because once I had accomplished the goal of losing weight, I thought I was done.

Oh, The Horror Of It

As I came to the realization that I needed to change my eating and exercise habits permanently I was struck with the horror of picturing myself like Yule Gibbons munching on raw beansprouts and brown rice from a hand-thrown pottery jar. That is why I put off trying to maintain my weight and continued on the yo yo for years, even after I knew what I had to do.

Weight Management Is Not That Bad

As it turns out, once I really sat down and began to attack the problem I found it not so bad. I found out that you go through a series of compromises with your appetite and your desire for health and decent looks. You don't have to give up the things you love to eat as much as the frequency at which you use to eat them. In other words, you pick times to splurge followed by periods of repentance.

The following are the key points I use to maintain my weight.

  • I have a strict set weight
  • I try to anticipate and prepare for splurges
  • I eat a base diet of proteins and vegetables
  • I drink 64 ounces of water or more per day
  • I try to do some fun activity that passes for exercise at least 3 times a week

Strict Weight Limit

Like I have indicated before, I don't want to end up eating raw organic bean sprouts and sipping ionized spring water for the rest of my life, so I established a set weight for myself that acts as a stop sign for unbridled eating. Any time the scales goes 2 pounds above that weight, I go into weight-loss mode. This has to be the basis for weight management.

Anticipate And Prepare

If I know a birthday party is coming, or a special occasion, I make sure I pre-diet. Keeping the glorious event fixed firmly in my mind I spend 2 or 3 days before the party or event losing weight so that I can enjoy the party without guilt. I really concentrate on proteins and strictly avoid carbohydrates.

Manage Your Weight With A Proper Base Diet

The culprit in weight gain is refined sugar and starches. Next comes complex carbohydrates. These items cause your body to produce insulin which is a big factor in fat storage in your fat cells. So if you base your diet on vegetables and protein like white meats you will have a very easy time maintaining your weight. You need to strictly avoid simple sugars and starches as completely as you can in your everyday diet. Save these for the splurge. You need to educate yourself as to which foods contain starch and sugar since many times these things are hidden.

Drink Water

Water is the transportation system of the body and without enough of it every function of your body slows down including your body's handling of food. So drink your water. If you can't stand water put some Crystal Lite in it.

Do Physical Activities 3 Times A Week!

Look, find something you like to do. Keep looking until you find it. Nothing kills and exercise program faster than boredom so don't bore yourself. If you can increase your activity to once a day it is even better. If you put all of these points to practice you can easily manage your weight without any problems. You can still enjoy the things you like to eat, but you just have to plan when and keep an eye on your set weight. I promise you you will be happier in the long run.
